CHANDIGARH: Breaking from the tradition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the swearing-in ceremony of the first BJP government in Haryana as former RSS Pracharak and first-time MLA Manohar Lal Khattar took oath as the tenth chief minister of the state on Sunday.

The other members of Khattar’s cabinet who took oath too were Rambilas Sharma (MLA from Mahendergarh), Capt. Abhimanyu (MLA from Narnaund), Anil Vij (MLA from Ambala-Cantonment), OP Dhankar (MLA from Badli), Kavita Jain (MLA from Sonepat) and Rao Narbir Singh (MLA from Badshahpur) besides three MoS in Bikram Singh Thekedar (MLA from Kosli), Krishan Kumar (MLA from Shahbad) and Karan Dev Kamboj (MLA from Indri).

The BJP legislature party, with 47 MLAs in a House of 80, had elected former Khattar, MLA of Karnal, as its leader on Tuesday. Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki administered the oath.

Khattar became the fourth non-Jat chief minister of a state, dominated by Jats. The ceremony took place at the Sector 5 Mela Ground of Panchkula near Chandigarh as a large number of supporters and members of BJP turned up at the function, outside Haryana Raj Bhawan for the first time since 1966 when the state was created.

Besides Modi, BJP chief Amit Shah, Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel, Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and BJP veteran Murali Manohar Joshi attended the function among others.

The BJP, which till now used to play second fiddle to other regional parties in the state, created history by winning a majority of 47 seats in the Haryana assembly polls.
