Farmers committing suicides don’t deserve help: BJP minister

NEW DELHI: At a time when farmer suicides have caught national attention, Haryana Agriculture Minister OP Dhankar says farmers who commit suicide are “cowards” and don’t deserve government’s support.

“Why should we help them?” Dhankar said on Tuesday, adding the Haryana government could not support such farmers, adding “they are running away from their responsibilities and leaving their families and children with liabilities by committing suicide.”

PM Narendra Modi had urged all political parties last week to rise above political differences and work together to help the farming community. He was speaking in the parliament after a farmer from Rajasthan committed suicide at an AAP rally in the Capital.

When Dhankar was the chief of farmer cell of BJP in Haryana, he did not mince words in criticising previous UPA governments for farmer suicides, saying the government was not doing enough driving farmers to commit suicides.
