NEW DELHI: General elections to the 18th Lok Sabha may begin from mid-April and continue for three weeks.

The Election Commission is believed to be ready for the polls and may announce the polls towards February-end.

This will be the biggest electoral exercise in the world, involving 80 crores of voters and more than a crore officials including security personnel.

The Centre may convene a special session of Parliament before polls are announced. The government wants to pass a Vote-on-Account for expenses in the first half of the next fiscal so that the new government has time to present a full-fledged budget in the next Lok Sabha.

This will also provide an opportunity to the UPA to pass Bills in the run-up to the polls. The present Lok Sabha will expire on June 1. The new government has to be constituted by May 31st May.

Assembly elections will also be held in three states — Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim — along with the Lok Sabha election.
