National Technology Day (India) — 11 May has been officially declared as National Technology Day in India to commemorate the first of the five tests — Pokhran-II — that were carried out on 11 May 1998. The day was officially signed by the then Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajapayee. ‘Buddha Smiles’ was the assigned code name for the test. The day is celebrated by giving awards to various individuals and industries in the field of science and industry.

Pokhran-I was conducted on 18 May 1974. ‘Smiling Buddha’ was the assigned code name of India’s first nuclear weapon explosion. The device was detonated on the army base at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan by the Indian Army.
