Congress panel clears 22 MLAs for Delhi polls

The screening committee of the Congress has cleared the names of 22 sitting MLAs to contest the Delhi Assembly elections in December.

Refusing to divulge the names of these MLAs, sources said they were elected to the fourth Assembly in 2008 by a good margin of votes, have a good image in their respective constituencies, have consistently worked in their areas and are in a winning position.

The workers who had applied for tickets to contest from the constituencies were not as strong as these sitting MLAs, a senior party leader who is privy to the deliberations of the screening committee, said.

Their names will now be sent to the central election committee where they will be given the final approval.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Delhi Congress chief Jai Prakash Agarwal were on the same page while discussing the candidature of the MLAs with other screening committee members MPs V Narayansamy and Bhubaneshwar Kalita, party general secretary Shakeel Ahmed and secretary Kuldeep Nagra.

The screening committee will again meet on Tuesday to discuss the fate of other sitting MLAs and decide on the names to be given tickets on seats where the Congress party lost.
