Udaipur: While Narendra Modi was addressing his supporters in Patna on Sunday, his influence was being felt hundreds of kilometers away.

The Udaipur Municipal Corporation had invited poets to recite poems as part of a cultural event to celebrate Diwali in the UMC premises here on Sunday.

As a poet began singing Modi’s praise, councilors from Congress and BJP almost came to blows. However, situation was brought under control by organisers soon.

“One poet, Abdul Gaffar, began his poems with the praise of Narendra Modi. He was reciting as if it was a political programme. So we objected and demanded to stop the poet from praising Modi,” said Dinesh Srimali, leader of opposition and Congress councilor.

“It was the programme of municipal corporation, not a political forum. Our objection was initially ignored and BJP councilors pushed us. The poet was later asked to stop,” he said.

The programme restarted after a brief interruption. Congress councilors have demanded to the district magistrate to recover the expenditure be from the BJP.

Udaipur mayor Rajni Dangi said poets were expressing their views and had nothing to do with the BJP or Congress.
