NEW DELHI: It’s official! BJP has decided to field former TV star Smriti Irani against Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi at Amethi, and Ajay Agarwal, an advocate from Rae Bareli, against Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the 16th Lok Sabha elections.

In a departure from the trend of walkovers to top-rung leaders till recently, the high and mighty have to now fight hard to win membership to the parliament.

In most of the cases party bigwigs were being gifted with walkovers as the main parties were either remaining absent from the battles or putting up weak candidates to get rid of criticism. However, the trend has changed this time, particularly after the Aam Aadmi Party was born.

The newly-formed party, which faces a parliament elections for the first time, has promised to make the battle tough for those who have been treating politics their fiefdom.

The 38-year-old Irani, a member of the Rajya Sabha, became a household name with a popular Hindi TV serial “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi”. Besides Irani, Rahul has to fight against senior AAP leader Kumar Vishwas in Amethi. Vishwas has been camping there since a month and has promised not to return to Delhi before the elections are over.

The decision of the BJP came after the Congress decided to field Rahul’s close aide Madhusudhan Mistry against Narendra Modi at Varanasi. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal has already announced his candidature against Modi at the temple city.
