AHMEDABAD: The BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi played a masterstroke on Wednesday as the Lok Sabha elections reached half-way.

In a rare interview to ANI, telecast live by many channels, Modi called for an investigation into the allegations against him on the 2002 Gujarat riots and hang him in public if there is even a grain of truth. But he won’t seek apology to the nation.

Modi, who was the chief minister of the state during the riots that claimed more than 1000 Muslims, said an apology would serve no purpose because that is not the right way to deal with such allegations. He said his conscience is clear. If he was guilty, he should be punished exemplarily.

“I am convinced that if there is even a grain of truth in the allegations, I feel for India’s bright future and traditions, Modi should be hanged in the street square. There should be such exemplary punishment that no one dares to commit such a crime for 100 years.

On refusal to wear a skull cap, Modi said he did not believe in politics of appeasement. “Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Ballavbhai Patel never wore a skull cap. This began in last two decades. Politicians began this practice for political gains. I don’t believe in this, and won’t resort to such practices,” he added.

On his recent statements over criminal cases against MPs and MLAs, he said criminalization of politics is a serious issue. If elected to power, he would urge the Supreme Court to appoint special court to try those cases and deliver a verdict within a year.

Modi, seemingly ahead of others in the race to the next prime minister of India, promised he would not work vindictively, and utilise his time and energy for doing good things for public at large.
