NEW DELHI: BJP has not only managed to end the ten-year reign of Congress in Haryana but has the largest number of MLAs with assets worth more than Rs 1 crore. The party’s 47 MLAs include 40 crorepatis and five with criminal cases registered against them.

As per the Association for Democratic Reforms data, there is a fall of seven per cent MLAs elected with criminal charges than in 2009. Out of 90 MLAs, nine (10%) have declared criminal cases against them in elections affidavits. The list includes five of BJP, two INLD, one each of Congress and Haryana Janhit Congress. Two BJP MLAs have serious charges of misconduct.

Crorepati MLAs:

A total of 75 MLAs have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore as against 66 in 2009. BJP with an average assets of Rs 10.50 crores per MLA, has the highest number of crorepati MLAs — 40. Congress, which lost to BJP after ruling the state for ten years, has 14 crorepati MLAs. Only one Congress MLA fails to qualify the rich list. INLD comes third with 13 while both MLAs of HJC (BL) and all five Independents have assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore each.

The average assets per winner are Rs. 12.97 crores as against Rs. 4.38 crore per candidate who fought the elections. In 2009, the average assets per winner was Rs. 6.71 crores. Among major parties, the average assets per winner for the 47 BJP winners are Rs 10.50 crores, Rs.13.01 crores for 19 INLD winners, Rs. 12.45 crores for the 15 Congress winners and Rs. 13.95 crores for the five Independents.
