NEW DELHI: In his third and probably final press conference as PM, Manmohan Singh announced his decision to retire after the end of his current tenure, and suggested Rahul Gandhi as the next PM if UPA comes to power.

The Congress vice-president has all the credentials to become a successful PM of the nation, Singh said even as he launched his sharpest attack against Narendra Modi, the PM candidate of BJP.

He held Modi responsible for the mass killings of Muslims in Gujarat in 2002. On the anti-Sikh riots in 1984, the PM said he had publicly apologised for that, adding that should not have happened.

The PM said despite the stinging inflation and lack of employment generation, he has done a good job and claimed he would be remembered for his contribution to India’s economy.

Singh blamed the media and opposition leaders for being harsh to him to the extent he did not deserve.

“My government tried to push for a transparent bidding process which was forgotten,” the PM said, adding his government will come out unscathed when history will be written.

However, the PM invited sharp criticism from opposition leaders including BJP chief Rajnath Singh and others for his remarks against Modi.

Mr PM, you don’t qualify to charge Modi just because you had apologised to Sikhs…
