NEW DELHI: India has finally got a strong anti-corruption watchdog in Lokpal on Wednesday with approval of President Pranab Mukherjee to the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, 2011.

All the political parties except Samajwadi Party had voted in favour of the Bill in the Lok Sabha a day after it was passed in the Upper House with several amendments.

Will the legislation be able to check corruption? The UPA government says the law has enough teeth to check corruption, so as most of the political parties.

However, the Aam Aadmi Party, which was born out of the Janlokpal movement, is of the opinion that the legislation will encourage corruption in stead of checking the menace even as party chief Arvind Kejriwal called it a ‘Jokepal’.

After passage of the Bill, social activist Anna Hazare who had led the Janlokpal movement and held a fast in Delhi’s Ramlila ground for 13 days in 2011, thanked all political parties for their support to the Bill in the parliament.

While Congress leaders thanked party vice-president Rahul Gandhi for throwing his weight behind the Bill, BJP had given credit to Hazare.

Kiran Bedi, a social activist and an aide of Hazare, congratulated all following the President’s approval.
