New Delhi: The Election Commission has decided to ban use of brooms in public premises in Delhi till the Assembly elections are over.

The Commission had apparently come to know that the BJP was going to demand a ban on showing hands by government employees in public places till the model code of conduct remains effective.

The saffron party has decided to submit a memorandum in this regard to the Electoral Officer of Delhi on Monday, in retaliation to Congress’ demand for hiding water bodies with lotuses in full autumn bloom in the Mahakaushal, Malwa and Bundelkhand regions in Madhya Pradesh.

Highly placed sources in the Commission said they apprehend both Congress and BJP are likely to accuse the constitutional authority for not providing a level-playing field if the Aam Admi Party registers a massive victory in the polls which is likely to happen.

So use of brooms by government authorities and Safai Karamcharis need to be stopped while sweeping or cleaning public premises.

However, a few in the Commission feel such action may not be required as the Safai Karamcharis are working for municipal corporations or on contractual basis with private contractors.

It is learnt that the Commission is planning to hire vacuum cleaners till polling takes place in Delhi December 04.

Meanwhile, the AAP has declared to oppose any such move that may leave Delhi in bad shape. Arvind Kejriwal and his team are going to hold an urgent meeting today afternoon to discuss next course of action if the Commission decides to provide vacuum cleaners for the job before a ban on broom, the election symbol of the Aam Admi Party.
